HOW MY FAMILY MANAGED
TO COME TO SYRACUSE, NY
My father, James H. Brown, Sr., was
a migrant worker from Florida who, from 1965 to 1968,
would bring my family to Auburn, NY to work. Our family
would reside at a little camp outside of Auburn called
King Ferry. There, my family would pack corn, pick strawberries,
and pick green beans. In 1968, my father moved our family
to Syracuse, NY. As a little girl, my father and mother
taught me how to make a dollar. I come from a very close,
strong family background. My siblings and I were shown
a lot of love and had very supportive parents. My parents
taught me values and responsibility at a very young
age, and as I grew up, these values were instilled in
me. I was able to raise my own children with the same
values that my parents taught me. I thank my parents
for making me the person I am today

HOW I GOT INTERESTED IN
HELPING STOP YOUTH VIOLENCE:
I never thought our youth violence would hit so
close to home, but I lost my nephew Darryl Patterson,
to gun violence. I just wanted to do something to show
our youth that we all care, and also let them know that
education comes first. I noticed many of our youth did
not have the proper supplies to go to school, so I decided
that with our help, this is one thing the youth of our
community would not have to worry about. |
PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
I created something that really means a lot to me.
I want to let the youth of our community know we are
committed to them and their peaceful education. In 2002,
I hosted the 1st Annual Youth Day BBQ, with an attendance
of 850 youth and their parents. This year (2006), we
had in attendance of 5000 + youth and their parents.
At the BBQ, we give the youth school supplies which
consists of backpacks, free computers, and toiletries.
This event is well attended by are local and city politicians,
and well as families far and wide. Giving the youth
the supplies they need for school shows them our support,
encouragement, and commitment to their success. My personal
goal and objective is that all youth all over the world
would have the same love and support, and that their
city would host an event to show them that their EDUCATION
is the alternative to violence. |
MY GOAL:
To
continue with my service work to our youth, and eventually
make the Youth Day BBQ a calendar event for our YOUTH
far and beyond. |
